Feature & Follow Friday #3

Feature and Follow is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read

P.S. If you are a new follower, let me know on this post and leave a link to your blog so I can be sure to find you and follow back. : )

Question:  What is the BIGGEST word you've seen used in a book lately - that made you stop and look it up? Might as well leave the definition & book too.

Answer:  Honestly, I really don't look up words. I can usually figure out what a word means by the context it's used in. Although there are times when even the context doesn't help, and in that case I just guess and keep reading! I know I should probably stop to find out what the word means, but it doesn't happen often, and I find it disrupts my reading "flow".

Right now I am reading Origin by Jessica Khoury. She uses lots of scientific terms in the book, but most are explained within the same sentence. One that was not explained, and I just looked up, is Rickettsia prowazekii.

Rickettsia prowazekii: a species of gram negative, Alpha Proteobacteria, obligate intracellular parasitic, aerobic bacteria that is the etiologic agent of epidemic typhus, transmitted in the feces of lice.

Yummy! : ) LOL

  3. I sometimes use context clues too, but if I really can't figure it out or just want to know more, I have to look it up. It's really easy when I'm on my Kindle otherwise, I have to google or break out a dictionary. :)

  4. I have no idea what that complicated definition meant but I was done at lice feces, that's really all I need to know about it. lol I have Origin on my to-read list, I'm glad to know I have lice feces to look forward to.
The word I had to look up was from David Mitchell's novel Cloud Atlas. Check it out here
