Mad World Tour: Author Interview + Giveaway

Title: Mad World: Epidemic (Mad World #1)
Author: Samaire Provost
Publication Date: July 28th 2012

Blurb:
“The Black Plague is ancient history. It killed 100 million people nearly seven centuries ago, halfway around the world from the technologically advanced research center at Stanford University. Scientists there have recently begun examining samples of bone marrow from plague-infected corpses unearthed in Europe. All the necessary safeguards are in place. What could go wrong?

Alyssa and Jake are away with their class on a highly anticipated year-end trip to Broadway with their senior acting class when all hell breaks loose at home. Traveling back, and trying to find their families, they encounter deadly results. Riots are breaking out. People are being evacuated. And they have no idea what's happening to their families.

Horrific ordeals, heart-pounding tragedy, and chance encounters harden them for what lies ahead. Faced with tormenting decisions, they're forced to follow their instinct for survival at any cost - even when the cost is a heart-wrenching decision of life or death.

A harrowing adventure of frightening discoveries, horrifying confrontations and narrow escapes in Epidemic, the first installment of the Mad World series.
Find out what's got everyone so terrified.”

Title: Mad World: Sanctuary (Mad World #2)
Author: Samaire Provost
Publication Date: August 30th 2012

Blurb:
"The year is 2017, and the Black Plague infection has swept across most of the United States, leaving death and chaos in its wake. Martial law is the rule rather than the exception, with outbreaks cropping up when they're least expected. Alyssa and her friends must not only battle outbreaks of the disease, but also find themselves pursued by government agents – men and women determined to track them down at any cost.

Fleeing north to the fabled Sanctuary, Alyssa, Jacob, DeAndre, Caitlyn, Risa and Luke face disturbing ordeals and terrible tragedy as they encounter unbelievable situations in their struggle to reach safety. Using their skills and wits in their fight to survive against ever worsening odds, they weather hardship, betrayal, and the ever-present specter of death as they flee north, all the while vowing to protect one another – and most of all their precious 5-year-old Luke, from a world gone mad.

Sanctuary, the second installment in the Mad World series, is a heart-rending adventure of astonishing revelations, tragic discoveries, agonizing separations and devastating losses that test these friends to their limits. With heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat suspense at every turn, this is a story you will not be able to put down."

Interview with Samaire:
Welcome to Jessabella Reads! Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to answer my questions.

1.) Please give us a few sentences about the Mad World series and why we should read it.

Well, the Mad World series chronicles the zombie plague epidemic and how some friends cope and survive it.  They show amazing bravery and courage in some crazy situations.  It's an extremely fast-paced, exciting series that you will not want to put down until the last sentence is read.   It's a tale of courage and fortitude, of survival against all odds, and under incredible circumstances.

2)  What inspired you to write about a near future world with zombies?

Well, I wanted to tackle the zombie genre, and I wanted to do it logically.  I started with the students, describing them on their NYC trip.  While writing this beginning I read that scientists were actually in Europe excavating bodies of victims from the 13th century Black Plague, extracting the DNA from them, trying to reawaken the illness to study it.  For real!  This was in the fall of 2011.  I first thought, "Well, that's not a very smart thing to do..." Then I thought, "What could go wrong?  Hmmmm...." And there I had the idea for my story.   The premise is realistic.  It COULD happen. :-)

3.) What are your top three all-time favorite books(not including your own)?

Oh my goodness.  Well, I have so many favorites :-)    If I had to narrow it down to three, I'd have to pick: "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman, "A Wrinkle In Time" by Madeleine L'Engle and "The Dark Is Rising" by Susan Cooper.

4.) When you are sitting down to write, what are your must-haves?
A glass full of ice, with Diet Pepsi or water, but the important part is the ice....  I'm an ice cruncher ...lol!

5.) What authors, if any, have influenced you in your own writing?

Neil Gaiman, Susan Cooper, Madeleine L'Engle, Stephen King, JK Rowling, Alan Dean Foster, and many others...

6.) What is one thing about yourself that we couldn't find out by Googling you?

I can wiggle my ears.

7.) What genre do you think you would like to tackle next?

Well, my next book will be the third and final book in the Mad World series.  It will be called Mad World: DESPERATION.

But after I finish it, my next book will be about vampires.  It will be YA paranormal again, but it will have a very unique, surprising plot.

I wanted to write a zombie adventure with a real human element in it. I had just read "Hollowland" and thought it was great, and I wanted to try to write one of my own.

In the send half of 2011 I had read that scientists were actually (for real) going to unearth Black Plague graves from the 13th century to study the bacteria and try to reawaken it. I was very inspired by this, and thought, "if it goes wrong it could turn into a global Darwin Award for the most stupid in one expedition." LOL!! Luckily for all of us, the contagion has not escaped their lab. Yet...

    1. LOL!!! I was very young... maybe around 8 or 9, or it might have been earlier... I was in a bubble bath... and, you know that tightening of the scalp thing humans can do that is like when a dog or cat or horse perks it's ears up to listen? I found out I could do that to a huge degree. The ears move back and forth when I do that. It's weird. Although some would say not as weird as my talent for flaring my nostrils...

  10. I love it when people say "what could go wrong?" - it is just asking for trouble.

Do these books take a lot from history about the black plague, or just using it at background?

    1. The Black Plague is used as background, but there is a bit of the history behind it. I did a lot of research for EPIDEMIC. I hope you will enjoy it :-)

  11. I love how you came up with the premise of the book. What could possibly go wrong, indeed.

I love reading, but I also love being read to. If your Mad World series were turned into audiobooks, who would you like to read them?

    1. Omg... Well, I love Alan Rickman's voice so, so much, so if a guy read it, I'd want him to do it... But since it's first person from a girl's pov it would probably be a girl reading it... Hmmm.... Maybe (don't laugh) Sigourney Weaver? When I was writing the part of Alyssa, it saw her as Ripley from the movie Alien. A very strong, kick-a$$ girl :-)

    2. Ooh, cool! Sigourney Weaver is a very strong woman, I love her. Good voice, too.
