WELCOME TO GREY LONDON!

A Darker Shade of Magic
Author: V.E Schwab
Release Date: February 24, 2015
Publisher: Tor Books
Age Group: Adult/YA Crossover
Genre: Fantasy, Magic, Historical Fiction

Step into a universe of daring adventure, thrilling power,
and multiple Londons.

Kell is one of the last Travelers—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes, connected by one magical city.
There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad king—George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered—and where Kell was raised alongside Rhy Maresh, the roguish heir to a flourishing empire. White London—a please where people fight to control magic and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.
Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cutpurse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
Now perilous magic afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.

My Question
Out of ALL of the books you have written thus far in your career, which one would you say was your personal favorite to write and why?

V.E. Schwab: Oh, we’re never supposed to pick favorites ;) I have to say that each book I’ve written has served a purpose at the time, filled in some gap in my mind, or opened some door. But I think in the end my favorite one to WRITE was VICIOUS, because it was a complete secret. I had an affair with it, sneaking away between deadlines, for three years! I didn’t even tell my agent about it until it was done. That was such a joyous experience, especially when everything else was on deadline and laden with expectations. VICIOUS was entirely mine from the start, and I loved writing it so much that even if it had never sold, that would have been okay. It was just…mine. In the end I showed my agent because the ACT of writing it had been cathartic to me, and once it was written, I didn’t need it to be just mine anymore.

My Thoughts:
WOW! I was in such a reading slump until V.E. Schwab yanked me right out with A Darker Shade of Magic! It was everything I needed and more. The Londons are scary, beautiful, heartbreaking, and just plain AMAZING! Characters? BRILLIANT! I either loved-to-love or loved-to-hate every single character in ADSOM. Kell is amazing in every possible way...I can't imagine anyone not falling in love with him. He is powerful, smart, cool, funny, and has a certain "swagger" that you will only understand after reading the book.
As with all of Victoria's books, the writing is lyrical and just plain gorgeous. There was so much to discover between these pages and I loved getting lost inside of them!
This is a wholly unique,pitch-perfect, and fast-paced romp through one of the coolest worlds I've ever read!
I have to add that though this is "technically" an adult book, I found it to be PERFECT for YA lovers as well! I read mostly YA, and I flew through ADSOM in one night!
Grab a copy of this one NOW guys...I promise you won't regret it! Scratch that! BUY THIS BOOK NOW, as I cannot imagine my not having had the immense pleasure of reading it, and I don't want anyone to miss out on the sheer awesomeness!
Victoria, you have done it again...

    19. I have been waiting for this book to come out ever since I heard about it early last year. Which, coincidentally, happened to be the year I read practically everything Schwab had written. She immediately became my favourite author! I'm so glad I only have to wait two more days to FINALLLY read this. I'm really glad you liked it!

    20. I love the idea of alternate worlds, and I think the concept that there's no "perfect" world is really interesting and true to life. It makes sense that magic would be feared if it existed.

      ReplyDelete
    21. I really loved The Archived and I really want to read this new Victoria's book! Alternate worlds, magic, evil: sounds so good!

I can't wait to read it! My sister first suggested it, and read me the excerpt from Amazon- needless to say, it was great. Schwab's idea is really original, and her writing has an 'enchanted-type' feel to it. Oh, and I'd like to own Kell's coat, haha.
