There Be Monsters Here. . .
It's not as great as you'd think, living in a tourist town that's known as "the most magical place in America." Same boring high school, just twice as many monsters under the bridges and rival Families killing each other for power.
I try to keep out of it. I've got my mom's bloodiron sword and my slightly illegal home in the basement of the municipal library. And a couple of Talents I try to keep quiet, including very light fingers and a way with a lock pick.
But then some nasty characters bring their Family feud into my friend's pawn shop, and I have to make a call--get involved, or watch a cute guy die because I didn't. I guess I made the wrong choice, because now I'm stuck putting everything on the line for Devon Sinclair. My mom was murdered because of the Families, and it looks like I'm going to end up just like her. . .
I was pleasantly surprised by Cold Burn of Magic! I loved how the book starts off with the main character, Lila, running from guards after stealing a ruby necklace from a rich man's home for her boss Mo(who is more of a friend/father figure). That chase scene pulls you immediately into the story, and dosen't let you go until the very end!
I loved Lila as a main character. She was smart, fearless, an awesome fighter, and someone who you could root for! She had lost her mother at a young age, and in the beginning of the story, is living alone in a hidden room of the library in town. She defineitely had some abandonment issues, but that only made her all the more likeable in my eyes.
The town of Cloudburst Falls was a really unique setting, and I could picture it perfectly in my mind. Where rival Families rule like mobsters over a place where monsters DO exist was such a fun and refreshing idea! The plot was fast-paced and filled with action. I never knew what was around the next corner and that had me flipping the pages just to find out more. More about Lila and her past. More about who is after the sexy yet very kind and thoughtful Devon Sinclair.
All in all, Cold Burn of Magic was filled with surprises, laughs, magicks, rubes, and monsters! You will just have to read the story to find out what happens to Lila and the other characters. In a place like Cloudburst Falls, pretty much anything is possible! I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. Also, I think I will be checking out more of Jennifer Estep's other work!
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good urban fantasy or paranormal read!
"You are the son of the head of one of the most powerful Families in town. You don't have friends, sweet prince. Not really. You have allies, enemies, and people who want you dead. Nothing More, nothing less. Especially not with me."
"This was for the best. I knew that. Really, I did. But why did it have to hurt so much?"
