BEYOND THE RED

Pages: 360
Publisher: Sky Pony Press
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Alien queen Kora has a problem as vast as the endless crimson deserts. She’s the first female ruler of her territory in generations, but her people are rioting and call for her violent younger twin brother to take the throne. Despite assassination attempts, a mounting uprising of nomadic human rebels, and pressure to find a mate to help her rule, she’s determined to protect her people from her brother’s would-be tyrannical rule.
Eros is a rebel soldier hated by aliens and human alike for being a half-blood. Yet that doesn’t stop him from defending his people, at least until Kora’s soldiers raze his camp and take him captive. He’s given an ultimatum: be an enslaved bodyguard to Kora, or be executed for his true identity—a secret kept even from him.
When Kora and Eros are framed for the attempted assassination of her betrothed, they flee. Their only chance of survival is to turn themselves in to the high court, where revealing Eros’s secret could mean a swift public execution. But when they uncover a violent plot to end the human insurgency, they must find a way to work together to prevent genocide.
***My Review***
Beyond the Red is not your typical YA fantasy, and I mean that in the best way possible! Honestly, fantasy is usually my favorite genre of YA fiction, but I felt I was reading the same book over and over just with different characters and some slight plot changes! That is...until this book was put into my hands! Beyond the Red made me realize all over again why I love YA fantasy so much!

I literally read this book in one night without putting it down once, and when it ended, I wanted...no...I NEEDED more!! Ava Jae takes us on a thrilling, perfectly-paced ride through an Alien planet filled with some of the best world-building and characters that I have read in a long time! Everything was so unique and captivating. Not because the ending wasn't fulfilling, but because I am so freaking in LOVE with this world and these characters!

Eros is seriously swoon-worthy! He is just so REAL and that's was made him so funny and charming. I LOVED his sarcastic humor, which broke the tension in some serious situations. Kora, the sexy Alien queen was damn UHMAZING, and I literally want to BE her! There is some seriously steamy romance in here, but no insta-love! Inta-lust...maybe...but I'm okay with that!

I also loved the fact that Ava Jae allowed her characters to curse in the book! Sometimes, in my opinion, a situation calls for some cussing. I certainly know that at 18 years old (which is about how old our MC's are in this book) I had a pretty bad potty mouth and at 29 I still do sometimes! Honestly, it was mostly Eros that dropped the f-bomb, but Kora was raised to be an Alien queen and he a human rebel, so it makes sense. I personally think it's odd when there is a life or death situation in a book and no one says EVEN ONE curse word. How realistic is that? I mean really?!?

Ava Jae also uses interesting tweaks on the English language for the human "rebels". For example, Eros uses the word "kinduv" instead of "kind of" and "sortuv" instead of "sort of". There are also a bunch of "Sephari" words used in the book, though they are easy to decipher based on the usage and I never had to re-read any sentences to figure out what anyone was saying.

Honestly, this was one of my favorite books of 2016 thus far, and I HOPE to read more about this world, even if it's not about Kora and Eros specifically. Ava Jae is a wonderful addition to my favorite fantasy authors and I HOPE HOPE HOPE she sticks to this genre because she writes it so wonderfully!

If your looking for a YA sci-fi/fantasy mash-up that doesn't "fluff" over anything, look no further!
SHA! This book rocks!

Funny Quote - Eros:
"Stars above, I need to stop thinking about floating bed sex."

My Rating:
5 STARS
